The next new shirt design that we will be offering from Crucial Blast will be an exclusive new shirt that features the visage of my current favorite architect of HNW, France's Vomir. The Renonce disc that we just issued through our Crucial Blaze line is just the latest in an ongoing campaign of aural devastation that Vomir has been immersed in for the past couple of years, and in my opinion, his work continues to rank as some of the finest (and purist) harsh noise out there right now. Personally, I've been obsessed with Vomir's output going back to the Proanomie disc that came out on At War With False Noise a few years ago, and have been trying my best to collect everything that he's released (much to the befuddlement of those associates of mine that don't "get" HNW). I never stood a chance at picking up any of the rare shirt designs that have been released for Vomir in the past, however, so we made the move to work on a brand new piece with Vomir to make available through Crucial Blast; the result is the Renonce shirt, featuring a front and back print in dark grey ink on a black Gildan 100% shirt, the front featuring an image of Vomir himself, bagged and isolated, with the "Renonce" text across it, and the back has the text "Vomir - HNW" printed along the top shoulder position of the shirt. The shirts are being professionally screenprinted, and the design is going to be limited to 70 of these shirts and that's it, in sizes small through XXL. We'll have this in stock soon here at C-Blast and will post the ordering information for anyone interested in this design as soon as we have them in hand.

EARHATE REPORT: MICROWAVES IN BALTIMORE 9.18.10

Spent my Saturday night this weekend heading over to Golden West Cafe in Hampden to catch Pittsburgh's Microwaves at a show they shared with An Albatross and AIDS Wolf. Even though I've been working with Microwaves for a while, having released their last full length Contagion Heuristic on Crucial Blast a few years back, this would actually be my first time seeing the band live; I'd been a big fan of the band previously just based on their albums and Eps, all of which kill. Microwaves opened the show a few minutes after we got to the club, and rampaged through about twenty minutes or so of heavy, assaultive skronk-blast. The band had scaled down around two years ago to the core duo of John Roman (drums/samples/vocals) and Dave Kuzy (guitar/fx/vocals) and I was really looking forward to seeing how the band would sound as a duo live; it was certainly heavy, with John triggering these massive blasts of sampled synth-bass through pads attached to his drum kit while he pounded away mercilessly as Dave strangled and throttled his guitar and emitted a brain-snarling swarm of mutant thrash riffs, acidic no-wave skronk and bizarre effects. I wish that I could have heard a longer set from the guys, but it was killer regardless. John gave me an update on a new split Lp that they are self-releasing with another Pittsburgh band called Brown Angel that John plays in, so keep an eye out for that showing up on the Crucial Blast new arrivals list sometime in the near future. And keep an eye out for when Microwaves are playing anywhere near you. They deliver a primo dose of robotic skullscrape.

UPCOMING TITLES IN THE CRUCIAL BLAZE SERIES

I've been busy lining up some fantastic new offerings that are going to be released through the newly minted Crucial Blaze series of limited-edition compact disc recordables that started out earlier in the summer with the full length Bleak from ghostly industrial droners Robe. The second release in the series was just added this week (the debut four-song Ep from Wolfnuke, a gang of local blackened thrashers with, er, extremely close ties to Crucial Blast), and we have the following titles confirmed and in some stage of progress that you can look forward to. All of the discs will come in plastic dvd-style library cases with high quality artwork and presentation, insert materials, vinyl stickers, and 1" buttons, and most releases will be released in hand-numbered editions of 250 copies, with a select few released in smaller numbered runs.

LYCANTHROPIC WARHEAD Infinite Castigation 2xCDR - a super limited collection of warped, narcotized boom-bap and industrial black murk from this new project influenced equally by Scorn and Moëvöt, Tackhead and Abruptum, early Techno Animal and Brighter Death Now...

VOMIR Renonce CDR - a new, nearly hour-long wall of lightless oblivion from the French master of ego-immolating, pitch black HNW. Renonce will include a booklet of new writings from Vomir in the original French text, with English translations.

SCHREI AUS STEIN Tsasnaasjini CDR - the second release from this excellent new blackened, blissed-out, cold-wave/dreampop project from Ross Hagen of Encomiast.

CREMATION GROUNDS Abortion Sacrament 3" CDR - a very limited three-song/twenty-two minute set of brutal industrial noise, smoldering blackened HNW, and ultra-distorted black doom buried underneath endless layers of machine howl and feedback. Will include a chapbook of vile, surreal poetry influenced by the likes of James Havoc, Bataille, and Crowley.

GLASS COFFIN CDR - a new disc of savage, malformed low-fi black filth from Josh Lay (Cadaver In Drag, Swamp Horse, Temple Of Rot, and assorted solo black/noise/drone works) that cracks skulls apart and then vomits black offal on the wreckage, part Archgoat/Beherit style primitive BM, part atavistic blackpunk violence. The package will also contain an art zine that will feature an array of Josh's demented and hallucinatory artwork and illustrations.

EHNAHRE TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM ON CRUCIAL BLAST IN OCTOBER

A new signing...Crucial Blast has joined up with the Boston avant-black/death/doom band Ehnahre to present their new full length Taming The Cannibals in October 2010. After being directed to check them out back when their first full length The Man Closing Up appeared around a year and a half ago, I was instantly dazed by their jarring, alien approach to bestial slow-motion death metal that draws heavily from the twelve-tone serialism of composer Arnold Schoenberg. Even after years of listening to the most dissonant strains of death metal (Gorguts, Demilich, Immolation, Portal, etc.), Ehnahre (which includes several former members of the prog/gothic art-rock band Kayo Dot) stunned me with their extreme chaotic dissonance and pitch-black, chthonic textures, a combination of atonal 20th century classical music and vicious blackened death laced with squalls of free-jazz horns, stretches of intense choral ambience, and blasts of calcifying glacial doom. It's some of the most difficult death metal I've heard since Obscura, but manages to balance the extreme atonality and relentlessly unpredictable nature of their arrangements with the perfect amount of aggression and crushing riffage.
Taming The Cannibals will be available direct from Crucial Blast in early October, and the band will be supporting the release with a two and a half week tour of the East Coast and Midwest in October which will include a ten-date run with Idaho blackened droneologists Pussygutt (20 Buck Spin). The album will be available in stores and online extreme music retailers on cd and digital download on November 9th, 2010.

This new disc delivers more of the pulverizing, slime-covered sludge and primitive death metal rot that these Buckeye barbarians have been carving out in the back of Medina garages over the past ten years, continuing to follow in the coagulated blood tracks of Frost, Autopsy and Winter, but filtered through Fistula's uniquely mangled and inebriated scum-haze and utterly negatory worldview.

The new Starkweather album This Sheltering Night is the featured release for this week, and it's a monstrous slab of warped, sludgy, dissonant crush from the Philly band that continues to explore bleak, psychotic collapse through severely crushing and angular slow-motion metal, Rennie Resmini's manic vocal schizophrenia, and a new element of industrial ambience that makes this one of their darkest offerings yet. One of the few glossy magazines that I religiously subscribe to and read, Rue Morgue is the best publication out there covering the horror/macabre culture. Their upcoming 100th issue will feature the first review of a Crucial Blast related release, the forthcoming ROBE. "Bleak" limited edition disc that is coming out on the new Crucial Blaze imprint...pretty cool!

The featured release for this week is the new full length Clivages from the legendary, Lovecraft-obsessed Belgian chamber-prog band Univers Zero, their first in five years. As a HUGE fan of the French avant-prog sound, Univers Zero has long been one of my favorite bands to come out of this era of prog rock, and on their latest album, the band works with both the sinister chamber music side of their sound, and the amplified, doom-laden prog/fusion of their Heatwave-era. The disc is a must-hear for fans of bands like Magma, Shub-Niggurath, King Crimson, but Univers Zero are capable of sounding way more evil than any of those bands ever do (well, maybe not Shub-Niggurath). Clivages comes highly recommended if you are a fan of dark, malevolent prog...

MONARCH "MER MORTE" CD OUT NOW FROM CRUCIAL BLAST

Yeah, this was supposed to come out ages ago, but a variety of impediments stalled it's release until now. The Crucial Blast release of Mer Morte is finally freakin' out, though, and I gotta say, it looks and sounds just as great as the previous Monarch collection on C-Blast, Dead Men Tell No Tales. If you've been following Crucial Blast for a while, you probably already know all about Monarch, the extreme slow-motion sludge/doom band from France who plays so slow, so glacially, that Decibel said in their review of Mer Morte that "even at their fastest, Monarch! sound dead". They ain't kiddin'. Monarch's previous releases pushed the envelope on just how slow and miserable and anguished one band can sound, but here their crawling black drones and tectonic doom rumble seems to actually be decaying. If you're looking for some big, fat riffs to bite into, this isn't the place to look.

Like our previous Monarch release Dead Men Tell No Tales, Mer Morte is a reissue of a vinyl release that came out on the Spanish label Throne Records, this one from back in 2008. The Lp featured the monolithic track "Mer Morte" split into two halves across the two sides of vinyl; now, most Monarch fans find it pretty hard to not lust after their vinyl releases, which are all beautifully packaged and always super-limited, but it's also cool to hear the song uninterrupted, to hear it unfurl it's rotting black wings in it's entirety without pause, which is why we wanted to make this available on disc. And it's truly gargantuan sounding on this re-issue. “Mer Morte” is a single unbroken thirty-four minute sludge-and-feedback feast that sprawls out even further into the dismal black void that these French doom junkies have been lurking in for the past six years. As with previous releases, Monarch move through massive blackened tar pits of low-end riff and sheets of gluey feedback that are stretched out into monolithic slabs of sound across "Mer Morte", a grim, glacial ultra-doom monolith that crawls at a saurian sub-tempo. It's the most droning, static, deathly doomdrone that Monarch have so far released, not really that propulsive, certainly very little of anything that you could call a "groove", but instead just floating, decaying and corrupted, massive rumbling crush hovering in a sea of yawning blackness.

And vocalist Emilie sounds as gaunt and ghostly as ever, her vocalizations materializing across the spatial doomscape as distant ululating wails, breathy whispers, and putrid death shrieks, at times disappearing almost completely into the black fug for minutes at a time, or lurking as a hushed lullaby whisper way off on the edges of the crushing subterranean thrum. At the same time, this disc captures the band at their most formless and distended, with long sections of droning buzz where the band collapses into waves of pure amp-rumble and minimalist percussion, smoldering black clouds of ghostly cooing vocals and howling feedback drone, and eerie tectonic melodies...definitely one of their most extreme and dismal slabs of doom yet, more ambient drone than doom really, but still completely CRUSHING.

And once again, we've worked with the artisan printers at Stumptown Printers to create the packaging for this Monarch disc, presenting Mer Morte in a black offset-printed jacket with gold metallic printing and more artwork from Monarch's Michell. Might have taken awhile, but the wait was worth it.

DETHKLOK REVIEWS GNAW THEIR TONGUES

If you pick up the new issue of Decibel Magazine (Nov 2009, #61), you'll find that it features one of their Call And Response features (where Decibel supplies a random "name" metal band with a bunch of unlabeled MP3s that the band then comment on, with this month's ish featuring two of the members of cartoon death metal band Dethklok "reviewing" new releases from Javelina, Behemoth, and yes, our own Gnaw Their Tongues, whose All The Dread Magnificence Of Perversity is parsed by William Murderface and Toki Wartooth. This marks the first ever review that a Crucial Blast release has received from cartoon characters... you'll have to read the mag to find out what Dethklok's verdict is, but I can say that I was surprised that Wartooth even had a frame of reference for GTT's noxious audio slime....

Bunch of updates from the CRUCIAL BLAST compound this week.

First off, if you've preordered the new GNAW THEIR TONGUES Dread Magnificence shirt that we've had available for preorder on www.crucialblast.net, your order shipped out on Monday, and you should have yer goods in yer hands within the next few days. The shirts came out GREAT, it's one of my favorite Crucial Blast shirt designs so far. Thanks to everyone that has ordered this design.

Subarachnoid Shirts are shipping out shortly, the films for the shirts had be redone by the printer last week so we're running behind with these, but they should be shipping to us any day now, and we'll be mailing all Subarach shirt and package orders the same day that they arrive.

Subarachnoid Space are making their way down the East Coast on the second leg of their current US tour, and if you have a chance to see them play your burg, definitely don't pass it up. I went up to Philly this past Saturday to see the band play at Kung Fu Necktie, and while it was a super small show (and ridiculously early, due to the venue's dance music event taking place at 10pm), Subarachnoid Space thoroughly melted my brain with a powerful half-hour set of crushing acid-metal and improvised effects blowouts that achieved jet-engine resonance at times. So great! And their tourmates Ovo were nothing to sniff at, either; I've been waiting years to see these two Italian freaks in the flesh, and Ovo delivered the weirdness in grand form with a short but crushing set that was made up of mostly material off of their new album on Load (total Yoko Ono meets Melvins art sludge) that was offset with some droneological messing about and a few minutes of Stefania bowing her dreadlocks while drummer Bruno sat on the floor, looking like he was about to commit seppeku at any moment. Very cool people, too, as were the Subarachnoid folks - again, don't miss out on this tour!

In the BIG NEWS department, Crucial Blast's favorite PDX riffthugs Black Elk have been personally invited by Jesus Lizard to accompany them on four of the Lizard's West Coast dates this month. I'm freaking ecstatic that a) Black Elk are appreciated to this extent by a band of such stature, we're talking about one of the greatest underground rock bands of the past two decades, and b) that their music will hopefully turn on a whole new audience at these shows. No matter what, these shows promise to be spectacles of debauched aggression and total riff fury.

We have quite the mixed bag of stuff this week, ranging from the extremely cool Black Box that just came out on Flingco Sound, to a bunch of recent Malignant titles (all of which are crucial albums of crushing dark ambient) and lots of extremely heavy industrial sounds. One of these new industrial-tinged releases is the new album from Laudanum, the San Francisco band that features artist Judd Hawk and who specialize in one of the heaviest mecha-sludge assaults I've heard since the Saw Throat LP. Fans of old school UK stench will be all over The Coronation, as you guys probably already know all about Laudanum from their split album with Stormcrow that 20 Buck Spin put out a while back, but for the rest of you, these cats combine vicious slow-mo sludge-metal with punishing Swans/Godflesh-esque industrial pummel and waves of corrosive noise, with savage male/female tandem vocals and an almost suffocating dystopian vibe. I fell in love with this album by the time I was halfway through it - it's one of the heaviest things I've heard on 20 Buck Spin this year (which is saying a lot), and is also one of the best sludge/industrial hybrids of '09 next to Human Quena Orchestra's Politics Of The Irredeemable. The Coronation is our featured release this week, and fans of the ultra-heavy should def check this out.

SUBARACHNOID SPACE "Eight Bells" Coming In September

The word has already been floating around out there for a couple of months now, but I finally have some real details on this that I can people in on - we'll be releasing the new full length cd from Subarachnoid Space this September, it'll be available earlier in the month to coincide with the band's autumn U.S. tour that will be kicking off right around that time. I'll have more details on the tour soon, so keep yer eyes glued to this page for updates.
The album is titled "Eight Bells", and it's the first new release from Subarachnoid Space in four years (following 2005's "The Red Veil" on Strange Attractors). Featuring the current lineup of Daniel Barone, Melynda Jackson, Lauren K. Newman, Daniel Osborne, and Steven Wray Lobdell, the five songs that make up this album ("Lilith", "Akathesia", "Hunter seeker", "Haruspex", "Bird Signs") continue in the heavy lysergic vein as their last couple of records, fusing wicked metallic crunch with ethereal fx-laden guitar freakouts and some of the band's most narcotized jamming yet. "Eight Bells" comes in at just under 40 minutes, and will be packaged in another one of our high quality visual presentations with new artwork from Stephen Kasner.
I've been a big fan of Subarachnoid Space since back when the band was releasing albums on Relapse Records, and they have continued to be one of my favorite bands working within the heavy neo-psych spectrum. Their last couple of records pointed towards a heavier direction for the band, and this new material continues on that trajectory, combining blazing luminous axe-howl over hypnotic heavy riffage and dense squalls of fx-stacked sound. Definitely super stoked to be releasing this through Crucial Blast.
We'll have some audio samples from the album and artwork posted here really soon, too, so stay tuned!

The Human Quena Orchestra "Politics" CD is available now from Crucial Blast - all mailorder copies come with three 1" buttons with artwork from the album. This disc came out looking and sounding great, and it's easily the bleakest thing that we have ever released under the C-Blast imprint. The band just wrapped up their tour of the West Coast with Geronimo, and from all accounts, they freaking crushed. Their CD release show in Pittsburgh is coming up on the 25th with Brutal Truth, and it looks like it's going to kill - I'm even trying to make the three hour trip up there to see it if I can swing it. If you missed em on this tour, fret not, as the Human Quena Orchestra are gearing back up to tour the full US this summer and are planning on finally hitting the East Coast. Hell yes. Man, I love this band so much. I've been grooving on a lot of grim fringe lit lately, Apocalypse Culture, a bunch of Skipp And Spector novels from the late 80's, stuff like that, and The Politics Of The Irredeemable has been acting as my soundtrack for all of that over the past two months. It's a wonder that I haven't had to go on Paxcil.

We're back this week with a ton of new stuff, and we're especially stoked on two releases in particular - the brand new Human Quena Orchestra album The Politics Of The Irredeemable that we just released on Crucial Blast, first and foremost. This monstrous disc is one of the heaviest things that we've ever released, it's equal parts blackened glacial industrial, nightmarishly dosed dronemusic, and punishing slow-motion mecha-sludge, and I've been comparing to a cross between Corrupted and Sunroof whenever I've been talking this up to people. That's a really simplistic comparison for the apocalyptic aural visions that Human Quena constructs, but it gives you an idea of what's going on here. What you should do is head over to the main page at www.crucialblast.net and take a listen to the album on the streaming audio player that we have set up, and hear for yourself. Total crush!

And I've been hooked on another album this week, actually for the past couple of weeks, the brand new reissue of Whourkr's first album Naat. This French duo blew me away when I first heard them a couple of months ago after they sent their new album Concrete to me to check out, playing a brutal, complex hybrid of violent death/grind and extreme electronica that's so layered and chaotic yet catchy and loaded with AWESOME riffage that their music demands multiple listens to soak it all in. I've been bugging out over Whourkr so much that we're working on hopefully releasing new music from the band later this year, but in the meantime, their first album just came out this month, reissued on a new label, and it's a mindblowing slice of hyperfreak death/glitch that's essential for fans of Noism, Dataclast, Mulk, Drumcorps, Bong-Ra, and Reptiljan, and any other extreme, supersonic digital processor blastronica! THIS RULES!

GENGHIS TRON Board Remixes VOL 5 LP - PREORDERS HAVE ALL BEEN SHIPPED!

The Genghis Tron "Board Up The House Remixes Vol 5 " LP finally came back from the plant a few days ago, and we busted our ass to get all of the preorders packaged up and shipped out a few days ago. US customers should be seeing their packages dropping over the next few days, and international orders should be showing up over the next week. It's been a trial getting this one finished, but it came out great, and looks gorgeous as you can see from the pic above.

HEAD HERITAGE REVIEWS OF SORC'HENN + AUN

In an otherwise royally cruddy week, one bright spot that found it's way to our attention was a pair of short but glowing reviews that two of our most recent Crucial Bliss titles received at the hands of the Arch-drude himself, Julian Cope. On the February '09 update for his excellent Head Heritage website, Julian reviewed both the Aun "Multigone" and Sorch'enn "Faro" discs that were issued late last year through Crucial Bliss. Check 'em out:

"These past two months, my personal choice for all night repetition, ie: the piece that helps me most easily access the Underworld, has been the Uber-haunting 22-minute track ‘Dødsdansen (Death’s Dance), Life of an Island Lad’, from the FARO album by Sorc’henn. Released on that tremendous Crucial Blast subsidiary Crucial Bliss (www.crucialblast.com), FARO is a fine fine Black Metal record and, except for the more obvious and more stylized final 26-minute ‘evil’ track ‘Enez Varv Faaro’, goes about its sinister business secretly, intoning plainsong in cloisters, invoking camp-fires, digital distortion and wolves, and dancing at the edge of total ambience, nay, ambulence! Then, two minutes from the end, some old French torch song comes in and really sealeth ye atmosphere. Su-fuckin’-perbe!"

"I’ve also found Aun’s cataclysmic MULTIGONE album highly useful these past two months, its vast showers of electronics blasting, nay, brutalizing listeners with a racket somewhat akin to the music of Fall of the Grey Winged One (AEONS OF DREAMS), Kabalist (‘Shaman 262’ from VERMICHTE DIE GÖTTER) or some of the more apocalyptic Israeli noise music (Pootchlatz, Barbara). However, I believe that those of you who choose to seek sanctuary within the chaos of the 15-minute burn-up of the synthetic brass-laden ‘Steel Skull Plain’, will gain considerable meditative comfort. Sitting fogbound under its 35,000 feet of Zero Visibility is just the kind of O.D. it’s difficult not to succumb to in these dark Winter days. Again, the motherfuckers at Crucial Bliss (www.crucialblast.com) have scored big-time with this truly epic release. "

This week's featured release is the debut full length from Serpentcult, a Belgian band that formed out of the ashes of Thee Plague Of Gentlemen and which features the powerful vocals of one Michelle Nocon, whose utterly metal delivery makes this debut full length one of the most intense doom albums that has come in to C-Blast lately, to speak nothing of the INSANELY HEAVY riffage that this album delivers! Fans of crushing evil uber-doom, you need to hear this! Just released through the UK label Rise Above, Serpentcult's Weight Of Light is available on both CD and an extremely limited vinyl edition.

Other new stuff in this week: a limited edition cassette from Animal Steel, the power electronics/death ambient side project of one of the members of notorious PE instigators Twodeadsluts Onegoodfuck, and Akimbo's latest concept album about the infamous shark attacks off of the Jersey Shore in 1916, with their heaviest music yet. We have an album from the shredding avant-garde Italian black metal of Absentian Lunae that smokes, and the new disc of trippy cosmic funeral doom from the Russian band Abstract Spirit that fans of spacey keyboard ambience n' ultraheavy deathdoom will definitely dig. Also have a bunch of older MeteorCity stoner rock titles that we are carrying for the first time, including Blind Dog's excellent Captain Dog Rides Again, a heavy duty slab of Swedish stoner metal with shades of prog rock, pop and death n' roll, a Nebula/Lowrider split, and a couple of albums from the Swedish stoner metal powerhouse The Mushroom River Band, which features Spice from Spiritual Beggars on vocals!
